What Do Your Implants Look Like...? Is Your Privacy Exposed? Are Radio Frequency Identification Technologies (RFID) Skin Deep

I think at first glance most of mankind would think the use of RFID in the medical application of say, an Alzheimer patient for their own protection and well-being would be an acceptable proposition. I don't want to think of my Mom or Dad aimlessly wandering about lost if they suffered from Alzheimer's. But here lies the problem, I remember many years ago when I was first exposed to new technologies that eventually cumulated to today's Internet. I'm sure like many others who still think that the Internet is only limited by what we can dream with endless possibilities of better ways to serve mankind. What I didn't foresee was the pervasive and pandemic scourge brought about by organized crime, cybercriminals, Identity Thieves, acts of terrorists, pornographers, pedophiles, predators, cyberbullying, etc.

Sorry, but now you have Vice President Cheney prodding the Senate to extend and broaden an expiring surveillance law (Protect America Act); (what's in a name?), allowing the administration to eavesdrop on e-mails and phone calls. You see, the administration sent warnings to Congress about dangerous gaps in the government's ability to gather intelligence in the Internet age. WOW. Whose fault is that? If it's even true.

Oh yeah, the administrations allies in Congress not only want the expiring law made permanent but, want to amend it to give telephone companies and other communication providers immunity from being sued for helping the government for eavesdropping and other intelligence-gathering. Other intelligence gathering? We want this done, so we will give you immunity so we can use you to do our bidding... it'll be okay because it's the law.

It's not so much the use of RFID devices to help save a life or the need to protect our country from foreign aggression; it's the loss of privacy, personal freedoms, and the concerns regarding the stewards of our government and the influence of powerful interests groups manipulating these laws to strip away further individual freedoms and privacy... I don't want to be branded unpatriotic because I disagree with an Administration or be told I can't say this or that because, "It's the law". Checks and balances were put in place for a reason. Also, remember the "Protect America Act" came about during a time of confusion and a time of the publics' manipulation. Who knows maybe the day will come when everyone born in this country will be implanted with a RFID device and we'll all be wards of the one world government.

911 was without question a travesty, it seems a consensus that many individual freedoms were lost; however, what would happen next and what strategic moves would be coordinated by the powers-to-be if millions and millions of our personal computers on the Internet were harnessed (botnets) and turned inward to attack our own infrastructures by some subversive entity. Talk about chaos, loss of privacy and personal freedoms... that would be the demise of many core infrastructures. I'm surprised it's not a block buster movie.

As for RFID, the thoughts expressed by Hewlett-Packard (Canada) was the use of electronic tagging and tracking properties by health care professionals would help make their "administrative lives easier while saving lives". It's interesting which benefit comes first. The future of RFID can open Pandora's Box regarding serious non-public information issues and the loss of personal privacy.

As I mentioned earlier regarding the evolution of the Internet, it's such a valuable global resource for the entire world and yet its $400 billion price tag keeps adjusting beyond inflation worldwide because of cyber-criminals, not to mention the devastating effects on the lives of millions of individuals.

It seems to be a question of how much personal privacy are you willing to give up under the stewardship of governments and large corporate conglomerates for perceived threats and conveniences. Our desire to protect our freedoms and personal privacy, whether or not the attack originates from the Internet, RFID implants, intrusive enacted laws, or self induced acts of ignorance is a very real concern and to what degree we'll be able to assure our freedoms and personal privacy, begins with a knowledge and understanding on how to protect and defend our personal information... first, stop giving it away.
